A short, unhurried note written after the last page, by the child, or by you together. Not a book report. No spelling corrections, no stars.

A FEW PROMPTS TO GUIDE YOU

  1. 1.Which character would you sit next to at lunch, and why?
  2. 2.Copy out one sentence you'd like to keep. What made you choose it?
  3. 3.What stayed with you?
  4. 4.Is there anything you would have done differently in the story?
  5. 5.Draw the place you'd most like to visit in the book. Label up to three things.
  6. 6.Write one line to the author. You don't have to send it.

Keeping a Diary or Journal

Suggestions for Building a Regular Practice

  1. Ten minutes is plenty.
  2. Get them to draw if they cannot write.
  3. Or they can dictate to you.
  4. Read the notes back aloud at the end and reflect together.
